Just to show it works: I took this photo with the 2.0 beta client. The shadows are there to hide the problem of the disappearing eyes. The subject, of course, is the beautiful and talented Foxbean Liebknecht.
Now, if I could only see the eyes...

Same as before. You have to enable the "Advanced" menu item, and then use the debugging settings as follows:
set renderdeferred to false
set renderuserfbo to true
set renderdeferred to true
Shift-Ctrl-ALt-D for advanced, You also have to have antialaising disabled before enabling shadows.
